What is the difference between a package's gross weight and its dimensional weight? How is this information used to determine last mile shipping fees from the warehouse to the end customer?
Gross weight is the actual weight of the package. Dimensional weight (also known as volumetric weight) is calculated as (Length x Width x Height) / 166 to convert inches to pounds for U.S. domestic shipments.
Last mile shipping fees from the warehouse are based on the chargeable weight of the package. The calculation for chargeable weight is as follows: If gross weight of the package is less than or equal to the dimensional weight, then dimensional weight is used as the chargeable weight. Otherwise, gross weight is used as the chargeable weight.
